Personal finance site moneywise.co.uk wants to find out whether chancellor Alistair Darling could pass a finance test set for teenagers.
The under-fire cabinet minister has been invited to take time out from being heckled at the dispatch box to see how his financial knowledge compares with that of teenagers studying finance in Britain's schools.
Moneywise has also thrown down the gauntlet to heavyweight figures from the world of politics such as cabinet minister Ed Balls, former Lib Dem acting leader Vince Cable and Sir Trevor McDonald.
Showbiz celebrities Davina McCall and former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq are other public figures to be challenged.
While it is unlikely that any of the names mentioned above will subject themselves to the test, moneywise does have a more serious ambition - an aim to give all school children the option of studying personal finance before entering the world of work.
Moneywise editor Rachel Lacey said: "Ofsted's recent damning indictment of the state of personal finance education in our schools confirmed that it is an issue which must be addressed."
To neglect it could mean that ignorance about debt is passed on to another generation.
"Initially I applied for a loan to consolidate my debts. However, after speaking to one of your advisors, it became clear that a far better solution would be to go on one of your financial management plans...
Everything was made so simple and the continual support and advice you have provided from my initial enquiry and whilst on my financial management plan has resulted in my debts nearly being clear now! I can't thank you enough for your help."
