Stress-busting shopping trips ‘lead Brits into debt’

Shopping Britons who attempting to alleviate the stress of their working lives by going on shopping trips are entering further into debt, reports suggest.

Data from YouGov for charity the Retail Trust, suggests that a quarter of Britons go to the shops to relieve their stress, despite the trend for rising personal debt in the UK.

The research also found that ten per cent of supermarket workers admit to owing more than 100 per cent of their income on personal debt.

Nigel Rothband, chief executive of the Retail Trust, told Reuters: “It is estimated that an astonishing one in five people in Britain work in the retail industry and the survey results reinforce the fact that there are a large number of people in need of help and advice.”

Regionally, those living in Wales ranked highest for stress-related shopping, in comparison to London and the West Midlands.

The news follows a survey from Prudential saying that about 3.4 million Britons are landing themselves in debt by spending their pay increases before actually receiving them.

People concerned about the level of their debt, but wishing to investigate an alternative to bankruptcy, may wish to consider an individual voluntary arrangement.
