Travellers in debt ’should cut roaming costs’
Holidaymakers facing personal debt problems should look to their mobile phones to cut costs, it has been advised.
Figures published by moneysupermarket.com show mobile providers could add more than £6 million to Britons’ personal debt in July alone due to roaming charges on overseas calls.
And while new European regulations place a limit on the roaming charges which may be enforced from June 30th, the website claims that telecoms providers could legally take until September 30th to implement the changes.
Rob Barnes, head of mobiles, warns consumers not to allow this to add to their personal debt.
“Costs for Brits using mobiles abroad are amongst the highest in Europe, so travellers should look at ways to cut costs,” he suggests.
“For frequent travellers, global sim cards are a good idea as they allow you to visit different countries using the one card.”
However, the regulations do insist that all mobile operators offer a Eurotariff to their customers by July 30th at the latest.
Consumers with a debt problem may welcome the attempt to reduce their expenditure on making calls while overseas.
