Pursuit of love ‘adding to personal debt’

Love British singletons are increasing their levels of personal debt in the pursuit of love, according to a new study.

Research by MoneyExpert suggests the average cost of searching for romance each year is £1,000, with men spending about £30 more each month than women.

The most expensive place to look for love in Britain is unsurprisingly London, with those in the capital spending an average of £108.30 on dates and searching for a partner, compared with an average of just £47.82 in Scotland.

Those aged between 35 and 44 years old are the biggest spenders, while singletons over the age of 55 are most frugal.

Sean Gardner, MoneyExpert chief executive, commented: “Gone are the days of a bunch of flowers and a trip to the movies.

“The modern singleton must be prepared to fork out hundreds of pounds to find love as people get ever more extravagant in their expectations - and their spending.”

Some studies have suggested that a date in the UK can cost as much as £200, with men tending to pay for more on the date and women spending larger amounts on their appearance in preparation.

Britons could be advised to seek professional help to ensure their dating does not add to their personal debt.
