Debt problem ‘at 40-year peak’

Pot of Gold The disparity between affluent Britons and those with a debt problem is at its greatest for 40 years, research shows.

A study conducted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation reveals the total number of households below the poverty line has increased in recent years.

There is some consolation for those facing bad debt, as the level of extreme poverty has declined, the report states.

But lead researcher Danny Dorling notes that there are few households on an average income remaining in the south.

“Most interesting and certainly unexpected when this work began is the geography of those households who are neither rich nor poor.

“Over time it has become clear that there is less and less room in the south for them - they have either moved elsewhere, or become poor,” the author explains.

Similar research published by the foundation claims that about three-quarters (73 per cent) of Britons believe the gap between the rich and those with a debt problem to be too large.

However, advice is available for those looking to tackle their debt problem.
