Students ‘entitled to debt help’

Students are as entitled to debt help as any other borrower, it has been suggested.

HSBC spokesperson James Thorpe claims that the financial services provider treats students equally among its customers.

“There isn’t really a difference between students and any other customer in that respect,” he says.

“If we see anyone getting into financial difficulty we will talk to them and find a way of restructuring their finances.”

Meanwhile, he urges students not to obtain loans from too many different sources on top of the common forms of lending offered to them.

Mr Thorpe notes that student loans and interest-free overdrafts mean many graduates will have “at least £10,000 worth of debt” before products such as credit cards are taken into account.

Those who find they have entered a financial situation which they cannot afford to get out of could stand to benefit from expert debt help.
