Away games ‘adding to personal debt’
Football fans could be adding to their personal debt by travelling long distances to away matches, it has been warned.
Statistics published by Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society show the average fanatic travels more than 5,000 miles each year to follow their team.
And the average figure of 5,554 miles is little more than two-thirds the maximum distance of 7,581 miles journeyed by Sunderland fans.
Spokesperson Andrew Beard explains: “Die-hard local football fans who drive to all their team’s away games would spend an average of four full days on the road.”
“This can be a costly labour of love when you take into account season tickets, motorway lunches, match day programmes and of course petrol,” he adds.
Residents of the Midlands are in the strongest financial situation, with Derby County, Birmingham City and Aston Villa fans all covering less than 4,500 miles each year.
Virgin Money previously revealed that, in 2006, football followers travelled the equivalent of the distance to Jupiter and back 12 times in total.
Those who find petrol costs have contributed to their debt problem could benefit from expert advice.
