School costs ‘pose debt problem for three in four’
Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice
Three-quarters of parents face a potential debt problem due to the cost of sending their child to school, it has been claimed.
Independent charity Citizens Advice warns that expenses associated with September’s return to school could push many parents into the red.
Almost all respondents to a recent survey told the organisation they had been asked to pay for photographs of their child.
Meanwhile, about 60 per cent had received requests for contributions towards activities and equipment.
Chief executive David Harker says: “For many it doesn’t feel like a ‘free’ education, it is hitting their budgets very hard.”
He adds that he is “especially concerned about schools that put pressure on parents to make so-called ‘voluntary’ contributions”.
Some 59 per cent of those surveyed predicted the cost of school uniform to rise this year compared with 2006.
The findings echo warnings from JPMorgan Asset Management that parents could face a debt problem unless they adequately save to fund their children’s private education.
