‘Bad debt risk’ for overseas illness
Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice
Travellers could be facing a bad debt risk by going abroad without protection against medical expenses, it has been warned.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, reminds Britons that the E111 form may not be recognised overseas.
He cites figures obtained by the website which found that nearly three-fifths (59 per cent) of consumers do not realise the European Health Insurance Card replaced the E111 in January 2006.
“It is astonishing that nearly two years after the card has been phased in, awareness has stayed alarmingly low,” Mr Mason states.
“Medical treatment in mainland Europe doesn’t come cheap and holidaymakers stand to lose out and suffer unexpected financial pain.”
The website also noted this week that the average age for Britons to obtain critical illness cover is 33.
Critical illness policies pay out a lump sum should the holder become too ill to work in order to avoid developing bad debt.
