Bedrooms ‘must be covered’
Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice
The need to insure items in the nation’s bedrooms has been highlighted by research from Abbey.
According to the financial services provider, the average contents of a UK bedroom are worth £4,000, costly items that to replace could leave the owner in debt.
One in four view the bedroom as the most important room in the house, with some £13 million being spent on the rooms annually, Abbey’s research has revealed.
More than 29 million have a TV in their bedroom, while around 15 million add a DVD to their bedroom entertainment setup.
Some 13.1 million have art exhibiting in their bedroom, while more than three million add antiques to their sleeping rooms.
“We spend almost one-third of our lives in our bedrooms so it makes sense that Britons are prepared to fork out to create a comfortable and relaxing space,” said Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey.
In all, 1.6 million people are estimated to have spend more than £5,000 on their bedroom - potentially adding to an existing debt problem.
Last year, Halifax said that more than a third use their bedrooms as places for exercise, risking breaking beds and other furniture in the process.
