Britons ‘finding it harder to get mortgages’

Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice

People struggling with debt management may be finding it harder to get a mortgage, according to a new study.

Research from online price comparison service MoneyExpert has revealed that mortgage approvals have fallen by 60 per cent in the past six months.

While the number of rejections was 463,000 in March, that figure is now 738,000, the study indicates.

Chief executive Sean Gardner noted that five interest rate rises have contributed to debt troubles for Britons, who may find it difficult to persuade lenders that they will be able to pay back a loan.

“Life is tough at the moment if you’re applying for a mortgage,” he said.

People between the ages of 25 and 34 were found to be particularly affected by more stringent lending conditions, as four per cent of respondents in this age group were turned down for a mortgage between March and October.

Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has described the dwindling number of first-time buyers in the market as “alarming”.
