3.5m victims of online fraud in 2006
More than 3.5 million people were victims of online fraud last year, according to latest research.
Data from the Get Safe Online campaign suggests that the average money lost to internet fraudsters was about £875 in 2006.
Tony Neale, managing director of Get Safe, states that consumers should treat the internet with the same amount of caution as they do when on the high street. He said: “The internet is a fantastic resource and its use is growing daily. Unfortunately, it is now also being used by criminals who are out to defraud us.”
The research also found that more than half of respondents do not feel responsible for their own online safety, with the amount being spent online having risen to £30 billion by British shoppers each year.
Consumers who have overspent on their credit cards and are looking for affordable methods of tackling their outstanding repayments may wish to consider taking debt consolidation loan.
