Brits rein back on new year spend

Article Category: Debt Consolidation Help and Advice

The average Brit will be reining back on their spending on New Year’s Eve, splashing out only £30.

Fool.co.uk, a personal finance website says it has conducted a study revealing over 71 per cent of people will spend hogmanay at home with their nearest and dearest and only two per cent are planning to venture out.

Of those questioned 33 per cent said the majority of their cash will be spent on booze with only 17 per cent of all spending going on food.

David Kuo, Fool.col.uk’s head of personal finance, said the "heavy spending of Christmas" makes people realise that they must start 2008 as they mean to go on.

"It’s all very well to sip champagne as you welcome in a year… but it’s a good idea to remember that when the bubbles have burst and the credit card bill arrives, 2008 could get off to a pretty flat start," he said.

The figures suggest that debt-conscious Brits are looking to cut back, wary of heavy bills arriving on doormats in January and turbulent economic waters ahead in the new year.
