Schoolchildren given lessons on ‘dangers of debt’

Packed Lunch Children in Jersey are to be given lessons on the dangers of entering a debt lifestyle.

Jersey Consumer Council deputy chairman Alan Breckon has introduced the new scheme aimed at year-11 students.

The local education department has accepted the proposals, which aims to prevent the situation of children leaving school with little knowledge of dealing with their finances.

Mr Breckon said of the scheme that “it’s about raising awareness,” especially since many teenagers were unaware of the dangers of borrowing.

He told the Jersey Evening Post that many young people are being persuaded by credit agreements at seemingly low interest rates, not realising that they would eventually pay more.

Mr Breckon added that the scheme might prevent younger people taking out loans that they cannot afford.

Consumer debt in the UK is estimated to be £1.3 trillion, according to research from Credit Action.

People who wish to regain control of their finances may wish to seek debt help.
